The knife is a significant symbol and serves as a dark memory of holiday traumas past. I wanted the sweet rich cake to be a visual delight. Mouthwatering and illuminated by all things optimistic. A celebration. But all celebrations have a darker side. Some family
slight, maybe? I have always felt an unease with overt celebrations as too many in my personal past went sideways. I am a hesitantly joy filled person.
