Back in 1962, this was the future. Yuri Gagarin and the USSR had just beat the U.S. to
space in 1961, so the U.S. went into space soon after, but more importantly started
airing The Jetsons Sept. of 1962. It’s a chicken or egg thing- when thinking about which came first: The Jetsons or the Space Needle & Monorail? The past’s idea of the future doesn’t always age gracefully, but I think this retro future has held up pretty well. The Monorail still functions, as does the Space Needle, and it remains the most iconic symbol of Seattle that we have.
